Artifact & Description
Journal Article Review
This is a journal article review on researchers Theodore J. Kopcha, Lu Ding, Kalianne L. Neumann, and Ikseon Choi article, "Teaching Technology Integration to K-12 Educators: A 'Gamified' Approach." The researchers write about the benefits of gamification in the classroom as a pedagogical tool, and they describe the different areas that are included in gamification theory. The participants in their study were graduate students in a university. My article review goes over their research and summarizes the practices they discovered. Additionally, I describe how I plan to incorporate gamification techniques in my secondary ELA classroom by using the concepts labeled: multiple routes, practice, challenge, and interactions.

Reflection
This artifact reflects ISTE Standard 1 performance indicator c: "stay current with research that supports improved student learning outcomes, including findings from the learning sciences." The article is a scientific research study on increasing engagement in the classroom by using gamification. ISTE Standard 1 is about continually improving my teaching. I continue to research effective practices for students so that I can incorporate those theories in my classroom to help my students. Growth as an educator is important to me because I want to practice professional development regularly, and it is valuable for my students to see me continue to learn and model curiosity and flexibility in my classroom. This article review in only one of many that I continue to research, read, and apply. As I research effective pedagogy, I learn new ways to interact with students, their families, community and global educators, and my administration. As I practice improving my teaching abilities, I will be able to network with others and set examples for them of incorporating innovation in the classroom and community. Additionally, as I learn and apply the research that I study about instructional technology, I will be able to understand and evaluate their efficacy and whether or not to continue such practices in my classroom.
