Artifact & Description

Animated Video

This is a short animated video that I created using Powtoon, a free online cartoon maker. I researched netiquette and several rules to follow while practicing netiquette. The video is only a couple minutes long, but it uses engaging visuals to keep students' attention.  In the first section of the video, I define in student-friendly terms what netiquette and digital citizenship mean. The rules that I explain through voiceover include: help the newbies, use effective research, and remember emotion. The goal of the video is to help students learn about proper use and communication on the Internet while they complete assignments and interact with others.

Reflection

Powtoon has many tools to create engaging videos for the classroom with words, music, voiceover, and animation. I used the Powtoon program to make the video because it is an accessible and available option for educators to use and show their students. It also promoted curiosity for using new online resources, so students can be inspired to make their own animated videos using Powtoon. Additionally, the graphics are already made and easy to insert into the video slides. The video is extremely related to the ISTE standard because it teaches students to be responsible contributors and digital citizens when using online technology. One of the rules the video teaches students is to "remember emotion." This rule is about considering other people's feelings when communicating with them. This is a preventative step to cyberbullying. Additionally, this artifact is related to the standard because it includes information about using research for posting correct information online. The rule students learn is to help them identify and evaluate sources for their credibility before using that information.
