ISTE Standards for Educators 4: COLLABORATOR

Educators dedicate time to collaborate with both colleagues and students to improve practice, discover and share resources and ideas, and solve problems.

4a. Dedicate planning time to collaborate with colleagues to create authentic learning experiences that leverage technology.

4b. Collaborate and co-learn with students to discover and use new digital resources and diagnose and troubleshoot technology issues.

4c. Use collaborative tools to expand students' authentic, real-world learning experiences by engaging virtually with experts, teams and students, locally and globally.

4d. Demonstrate cultural competency when communicating with students, parents and colleagues and interact with them as co-collaborators in student learning.

Artifact & Description

Edpuzzle Video

Edpuzzle is a program that educators can use wherein they upload different YouTube videos and add on questions to different parts to engage students. The video is also able to be cut down in length so irrelevant areas are cut out. Additionally, questions to keep students on task include multiple choice, open-ended, and true or false options. The artifact I created came from a video about Toni Morrison's novel, Beloved, for a 9th grade ELA classroom. The video would be used as an introductory element before beginning the novel, so spoilers are cut out. Five open-ended questions and one multiple choice question are spread throughout the video to help students understand the content.

Marble Surface

Reflection

This artifact is a great example of the performance indicator a for ISTE standard 4: "Dedicate planning time to collaborate with colleagues to create authentic learning experiences that leverage technology." It takes preparation to plan a lesson and search for an effective video to teach the content you want before teaching a lesson. Additionally, it takes planning time to prepare questions and attach them to the video to best help students comprehend content. This artifact from Edpuzzle also engages students with a collaborative tool because YouTube videos are combined with the features of the program to make students view and retain the content to answer questions appropriately. The tool helps students engage virtually, and the teacher receives immediate results to evaluate the students on the assignment whether the students are in the classroom or completing the project at home. The teacher is also able to troubleshoot issues with questions on the video if multiple students are struggling with it, and they can rearrange questions or get rid of them to help the students.
