ISTE Standards for Educators 7: ANALYST

Educators understand and use data to drive their instruction and support students in achieving their learning goals.

7a. Provide alternative ways for students to demonstrate competency and reflect on their learning using technology.

7b. Use technology to design and implement a variety of formative and summative assessments that accommodate learner needs, provide timely feedback to students and inform instruction.

7c. Use assessment data to guide progress and communicate with students, parents and education stakeholders to build student self-direction.

Artifact & Description

Screencast ASSURE Lesson

This artifact is a backwards design lesson plan for a flipped ELA 9th grade classroom. The lesson plan template follows the ASSURE outline for educators, which is supposed to help engage students and give them more personal responsibility for their work. The lesson has students complete independent work at home where they watch a screencast recording that I have made about the text, Jamaica Kincaid's "Girl." The students then create a venn diagram in any format they choose which compares the protagonist to themselves. When the students come to class, they participate in whole class learning where we review the major differences in their lives. Finally, they complete small group work where the students create drawings of the "Girl" and her life, and include citations / quotes from the short story to back up their work.

Marble Surface

Reflection

One way this artifact address ISTE standard 7 is that it provides alternative ways for students to show their learning. Within the lesson, students can compare and contrast the character from the story in different ways including on paper or through a digital technology of their choice. They are also able to access the information in multiple ways. I provide them with a link to a video of the author reading the story out loud as well as an article from the New Yorker that printed the story with illustrations. The students also receive immediate feedback on their work because they turn it in before class and we go over the assignment immediately. They do not have to wonder if they did the assignment correctly. Using a flipped classroom, ASSURE lesson plan template is following research that has found data of students having more scaffolding and achievement when using that model. Additionally, I will be able to see before teaching the class lesson if students have understood the assignment and the text. I can modify my teaching according to their answers because it has been prepared.
