Artifact & Description
QR Code Activity
This artifact is an interactive small group activity I created using multiple programs of instructional technology for an ELA 9th grade classroom. This lesson integrates mobile learning because students get to use their cellphones for the activity. First, the students are given part of Jack London's short story "To Build a Fire." The students move around the classroom to different QR codes and scan each one for the activity. The students write a summary of their section, watch an animated video, create a drawing using a free program online, and complete a multiple choice quiz about the story. The assignment integrates multiple technologies and the use of mobile learning to engage students in the text.

Reflection
This QR code activity represents ISTE standard 6 well. It is an independent / small group activity that students have to take ownership for. The teacher has done prep work and has the materials ready, but it is up to the groups to work together to complete the learning goals. Additionally, the teacher's prep work manages the use of technology in the classroom and makes each step purposeful. Each piece of technology is planned out and set as a QR code, and students are engaged using their tablets and/or mobile phones. The students are learning to communicate in multiple formats with different mediums through the strategies in this lesson. Lastly, students also have to use a design process and creativity to use the different modes of animation and digital art to complete the setting activity. The students have to comprehend and evaluate their pieces of the text to figure out how they would draw one element of the short story. This lesson plan facilitates effective use of instructional technology and learning.
